About To Start Your First Rebuild? What You NEED to Know:

Thinking about rebuilding an engine for the first time? It can be a big commitment when it comes to time and money. Here’s what you need to know before you start the process:

Know Whom to Trust
If you know your way around a garage, great! If not, get multiple opinions from experienced auto enthusiasts about what you’ll need, how much to invest, and other general advice. If a rebuild intimidates you, dealers and mechanics will be willing to do it for you. Make sure you get references to save yourself from a less-than-great garage mechanic.

Know What to Pay
Some dealerships will charge anywhere from $75 to $100 an hour. Home mechanics may charge less. How do you know how much money a job should take? Rely on fellow auto enthusiasts, blogs, and message boards to get a good idea before you scope out mechanics if you aren’t doing the job yourself.

Know How Much Time it Should Take
You should do your research when it comes to spending your money, and how you should spend your time. Utilize friends who have done similar projects in the past and the online community to help you estimate how long your project should take you (or a mechanic) to do.

Know When to Sell
Be honest with yourself and know that there’s a lifespan for everything. An old part could very easily cost more to fix than it's worth. If you think you're getting close to that point, then maybe it’s time to sell. Websites like eBay and Craigslist are great resources for odd parts that others are willing to pay for.
